This Border 500 road trip stretches from Northumberland in the east, taking in the Scottish Lowlands and the North Pennines, then skirts west along the Solway coastline into Dumfries and Galloway to Portpatrick at the tip of the Irish Sea. From quaint fishing villages, sandy beaches, through historic market towns, over vast moorland and under the canopies of enchanting forests your journey will be full of interesting things to see and do.
Northumberland is a magical place filled with ancient castles, hidden gardens, unspoilt beaches, rolling hills, rugged moorland, sweeping views, friendly little market towns and a cultural heritage all of its own.
North Pennines are one of England’s most special places. It contains a stunning landscape of open heather moors and peatlands, attractive dales and hay meadows, tumbling upland rivers, wonderful woods, welcoming communities, intriguing imprints of a mining and industrial past, distinctive birds, animals and plants and much, much more.
Scottish Borderlands offer a varied landscape; from the rolling hills and moorland in the west to the gentle valleys and picturesque Berwickshire coastline in the east. It is easy to see why Sir Walter Scott, one of Scotland’s most gifted writers and poets, was so enamoured with this peaceful region that he chose to build his beloved house, Abbotsford, here.
Dumfries & Galloway will immediately hit you with the beauty of its Scottish Lowlands. From the rocky and sandy Solway Coast looking out for miles across the sea, to the lush green inland forests and hills, it's simply amazing. For generations Scotland’s premier poets, writers and artists such as Robert Burns have been inspired by these lands.
