Full of mystery and culture dating back millennia, Peru has one of the most breath-taking archaeological sights in the world in Machu Picchu in addition to a wealth of other magnificent sights, from the stunning scenery of the Andes mountains and Lake Titicaca to the colonial cities of Arequipa and Cuzco, the Rainbow Mountains of Vinicunca and the fascinating and mysterious Nazca Lines.
Lima is Peru's capital city and is filled with colonial-era riches and is the only capital in South America that faces the sea. It is hailed as the gastronomic capital of Latin America. Founded by Spanish conquistadors in the 1500s, modern-day Lima is a populous city scattered with extraordinary Baroque churches, monasteries and contemporary galleries.
The Nasca Lines - No holiday to Peru would be complete without exploring the Nazca Lines, an awe-inspiring collection of over 300 figures that includes a whale, a condor, snake, llama, spider and a flower. All super sized, etched into the sprawling Peruvian desert and only visible from the sky!
Arequipa - is regarded as Peru's most beautiful city and boasts an incredibly scenic setting in the shadow of mighty snow-capped volcanoes. The city is located at an altitude around 2,300 metres and the streets are dotted with stately colonial buildings made from the white sillar stone earning it the nickname ‘The White City’.
Colca Canyon - the spectacular Colca Canyon, regarded as the second deepest canyon in the world, an area of terraced farmland and charming Andean villages where ancient traditions are still maintained by the locals. Wild vicuña and alpaca can be seen grazing on the slopes, but head to the Cruz del Condor viewing point for a chance to see Andean Condors soaring effortlessly above the valley floor.
Lake Titicaca stradles the border between Peru and Bolivia, the legendary Lake and its surroundings are an area of supreme natural beauty. The intense blue waters of Lake Titicaca, backed by snowy Andean mountains, is the world’s highest navigable lake at over 3,800 metres above sea level. Set sail on the floating Uros Islands, an intriguing archipelago where everything is made from the tortora reeds found growing on the lake.
Vinicunca also known as the Rainbow Mountains, is located in the Peruvian Andes at an altitude of 5,200 metres. The hike to the rainbow mountain will take around 2 hours and is a distance of 4 kilometers (2.5 miles), during which you will pass through a vibrant green valley with the snow capped peak of Apu Ausangate towering in the distance.
Cuzco is located high up in the Peruvian Andes, the once famous capital of the Inca Empire is now one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country. The city is filled with Inca buildings and history that were rebuilt by the Spanish, making it truly unique.
Ollantaytambo is dominated by two massive Inca ruins, the quaint village of Ollantaytambo, also called Ollanta, is the best surviving example of Inca city planning, with narrow cobblestone streets that have been continuously inhabited since the 13th century.
Machu Picchu stands 2,430 m above sea-level, in the middle of a tropical mountain forest, in an extraordinarily beautiful setting. It was probably the most amazing urban creation of the Inca Empire at its height; its giant walls, terraces and ramps seem as if they have been cut naturally in the continuous rock escarpments. The natural setting, on the eastern slopes of the Andes, encompasses the upper Amazon basin with its rich diversity of flora and fauna.
