This tour is inspired by some of World War II's most Iconic Movies. Discover the riveting tales of WWII with this tour, delving into iconic events such as “A Bridge Too Far,” Colditz, The Dambusters Raid, and the daring Great Escape from Stalag Luft III.
The war in the air above Europe saw the men of the RAF Bomber Command taking the conflict to the heart of the enemy territory. In this amazing tour we focus on the air war and examine four of its great stories; a Bridge Too Far, Colditz, The Dambusters Raid and the Great Escape from Stalag Luft III.
A Bridge Too Far - Officially known as ‘Operation Market Garden’ and includes the Battle for Arnhem where in September 1944, the largest airborne battle in history took place. The battle was bigger than Operation Mercury and the German airborne invasion of Crete in 1941, which was the only successful strategic airborne operation of World War II.
The Dambusters - Immortalised in World War II folklore as a result of the attacks on the dams of the Ruhr. The Dambusters was an elite Lancaster bomber unit and the raid was led by Wing Commander Guy Gibson VC. How much impact the Dambusters raid had is still debated, but what cannot be denied is the bravery of the men involved in the raid and the unique contribution made by Dr. Barnes Wallis; who developed the unique bouncing bomb that was used on the raid.
Colditz - Situated on a cliff overlooking the small East German town of the same name, the castle has stood on this site since the Middle Ages and has been used as a workhouse and a mental institution. Its place in history became assured during the Second World War, when it was Oflag IV-C, a prisoner-of-war camp for high-profile Allied officers who had repeatedly escaped from other camps.
The Great Escape - An audacious plan for a mass escape was put together in early 1943 by ‘Big “X” Squadron Leader Roger Bushell’, a captive RAF officer who was being held in North compound of Stalag Luft III. In charge of the escape committee, Bushell channelled the effort into probing for weaknesses and looking for opportunities and shocked the committee with the scope of his plan. His plan was to dig three tunnels at the same time and to attempt to get 200 men out in a single attempt.
