The Lake District - Covering 900 square miles, this unique and truly magnificent part of England is famed for its lofty peaks, tranquil lakes and, most of all, its sheer beauty, inspiring artists and poets throughout the ages. The rugged landscape includes Scafell Pike, England's highest mountain, which stands at 3210ft. Cumbria has sixteen lakes and over five hundred secluded tarns. Windermere is the longest lake and the villages of Windermere and Bowness are known as being the heart of the Lake District National Park. Coniston, once a mining village is also famous as the former home of John Ruskin and is the lake is where Donald Campbell died in his attempt at the world water speed record in 1967.

 

The Yorkshire Dales are famous for its wonderful scenery with its deep valleys, known as dales, with roads meandering between drystone walls and a patchwork of hay meadows and field barns.  Up above is heather moorland and distinctive hills, such as the much loved Three Peaks. There is the Settle to Carlisle railway which cuts through the National Park using tunnels and viaducts, including the iconic Ribblehead. Why not try some Wensleydale Cheese or go on a sampling tour at one of the local breweries which include; Theakstons Brewery and the Black Sheep Brewery where you can take a guided tour and find out how they brew their famous ales.
